We’re telling tales this half term

If you’re looking ahead to next week’s half term holiday already, here’s what we have in store at Sherwood Forest.

On Tuesday 31st May, we have storyteller and songwriter Brian Acton here, performing his magical tale for children, ‘A New Leaf’. An unusual leaf causes wonder and intrigue among the ancient trees of the forest. What could it mean? Join Brian on a musical tour of the Forest at 11am or 2pm to find out.

The event is suitable for children aged five and above, and costs just £5 for a child and adult together (children must be accompanied by an adult), and £3 for each additional adult (£4 and £2.40 for RSPB members). Booking is required. (Details via the link below).

There’ll be more storytelling over the Bank Holiday Weekend with a series of walks telling the legends of Sherwood’s very own Robin Hood. The Tales from the Greenwood covers the origins of Robin’s story, his cunning deeds and acts of bravery, while taking you into the heart of his Forest.

Walk one, on Friday 3rd June, looks at how the legend began. Walk two on Saturday 4th June examines his famous feuding with the dastardly Sheriff of Nottingham. Walk three on Sunday 5th June celebrates Robin’s fight against the rich and powerful, and how he came to the aid of the poor.

Each walk begins at 12.30pm from the Visitor Centre lasts 90 minutes and is priced at £7.50 for adults (£6 RSPB members) and £5 for children (£4 RSPB members).

And if the stories of the elusive outlaw inspire you, you may want to try your hand at our archery sessions in the Forest, running each day from 2nd-5th June. No need to book, just come along and see if you can master the skills that Robin and his band of outlaws used to such good effect.

We’ve got living history too, with the brilliant Sir John Savile’s Household company providing a fascinating snapshot of life – and war – in the 15th Century on 4th and 5th June.

You can also join in with the RSPB’s Big Picnic Event at the Bank Holiday Weekend weekend, with a family trail, games and activities. You can even hire one of our new picnic hampers from the café.
