Woodpecker Walk

Did you know that Sherwood Forest is a haven not just for outlaws, but for woodpeckers too?

Join wildlife expert Rob on a guided walk designed to reveal more about these iconic birds in Robin Hood’s forest.

With the UK’s three native woodpecker species – great spotted, lesser spotted and green – all resident in the forest Sherwood resounds to their unmistakable drumming throughout the winter and spring months.

And there’s every chance you’ll catch a glimpse of their colourful plumage as they move through the woodland canopy. Keep your eyes peeled and your ears open as you don’t want to miss them.

As this is a walk to see the birds in the wild we cannot guarantee that you will see them. However, you will learn much.

The walk will last approximately 90 minutes, so please bring suitable clothing and footwear.

It is appropriate for all ages, although it may be challenging for families with pushchairs. Unfortunately, we can’t allow dogs on this walk.

If you have binoculars please bring them.

Binocular hire

If you don’t have binoculars, you can hire a pair from the Visitor Centre shop. Hire prices start at £3 per day for children’s sets. Adults can hire an RSPB Puffin pair for £5 or Avocet for £7.

And if you like them so much you’d like to own a pair after the walk, the hire charge will be deducted from the purchase price if you buy them on the same day.

Speak to our knowledgeable staff about what would be the best pair for you.
