And we’re open!

Whether you’re a regular explorer, or an occasional visitor, you might have heard on the grapevine about the new Visitor Centre at Sherwood Forest. Following a year of construction and a few finishing touches, the centre welcomed its first visitors through the doors on August 16.

Our team of staff and volunteers were thrilled to see so many of you exploring the centre and the forest in our first week. It certainly gave them time to settle in to their new surroundings before the big Robin Hood Festival that started on Bank Holiday Monday!

If you’ve not been yet, the new centre is the best place to start your journey, acting as a gateway into Sherwood Forest. Pop into our welcome area to pick up your trail guide and find out about the forest, its legends and its wildlife. Here is also the place to stock up on the essentials; you can pick up your bow, arrows and Robin Hood hat in our gift shop!

If you have any little outlaws with you, you can try and tire them out at our new Robin Hood play area, which will be opening really soon! We also have some awesome wildlife explorer backpacks you can hire and take out into the woods on your walk.

The centre is also the home of our brand-new café! Whether it’s a pre-stroll cuppa, or a baked treat for reaching your 10,000 steps, you can sit back and enjoy stunning views out over the forest. Four-legged friends are welcome in our shop, and whilst we ask that they’re not taken into our cafe, we have lots of sheltered seats outside. The centre and its café are also fully accessible, including a lift and a Changing Places facility for disabled people and carers.

Our whole team are really proud to be a part of Sherwood’s journey, and are looking forward to bringing alive the forest’s stories and developing exciting new experiences for our visitors. We will be celebrating the legend of Robin Hood in a host of new ways, including regular events, guided walks, costumed guides, children’s trails and interpretation!

The visitor centre is open 10am – 5pm from March to October, and 10am – 4:30pm from November to the end of February. Before you come along to Sherwood Forest, you can plan your visit through our new website. Here you can find directions and information about events, car parking, and walking your dog:

Our brilliant new centre is open thanks to our supporters, partners and funders, including Sherwood Forest Trust, Nottinghamshire County Council, Thoresby Estate, The Woodland Trust, D2N2 LEP, Garfield Weston and Marshalls.
